DuPont™ Corian® can be used for a wide variety of interior design applications and accessories, including also those featuring complex shapes and geometries. It is now being used also in the external cladding of buildings. Combinations with high-tech materials, multimedia techniques, touch-pad panels and LEDs are also possible for DuPont™ Corian®. Some of the 100 colours are translucent. Combining the material with intelligent, interactive light technology results in eye-catching installations.
DuPont™ Corian® is a solid, non-porous, homogeneous surfacing material composed of ± 1/3 acrylic resin (also known as PolyMethyl MethAcrylate or PMMA) and ± 2/3 natural minerals. The main mineral is Aluminium TriHydrate (ATH) derived from bauxite, an ore from which aluminium is produced. DuPont™ Corian® is hygienic, long-lasting, renewable and easy to repair.

Urban space re-defined
Munich reinvents itself in an area which was for many years a train marshalling area – between Donnersberger Bridge and the Central Station. A modern urban district called Arnulfpark is developing and is offering extraordinary office space. One outstanding visual attraction is the ICADE Premier building which has an exceptional building envelope with an inner courtyard and elegant façade made of DuPont™ Corian® which creates a striking contrast to the stern pattern of the surrounding aluminum-glass-façade. The spectacular design by architects Ganzer-Hajek-Unterholzner/Louvieaux was developed in cooperation with Munich firm Landau Kindelbacher. Corian® was chosen for the interior wall cladding and furniture because of its inconspicuous seams and the resulting homogenous look of the structures.

Domforum Cologne: Counter made of DuPont™ Corian®
Cologne’s Cathedral has 300,000 visitors per year and is Germany’s most visited church. The visitors meeting and event centre of the Catholic Church, the DOMFORUM, which is located next to the famous cathedral, caters for the needs of pilgrims, people of faith and all the Cathedral visitors .The DOMFORUM held a competition to find a new design concept for the ground floor of the existing building. The competition, which was won by the architectural firm Martini Architekten from Bonn, demonstrates a simple yet modern look while sensitively incorporating religious features.
Visitors are welcomed at a multifunctional meeting point unit which incorporates an extensive counter made of DuPont™ Corian®.
Corian® was chosen because it can be easily formed into virtually any shape or design and joints can be made with inconspicuous seams, the material is not only hygienic but hard wearing and is especially suited to use in busy work areas such as work tops.

Neues Museum Berlin: DuPont™ Corian® stages the exhibits
The picture of Nefertiti returning to the Neues Museum Berlin could be seen in media all over the world. After 70 years in exile, the beautiful queen returned to her home in the centre of the German capital. Only very few people know: Nefertiti “governs” from a 1.5 meter pedestal made of DuPont™ Corian® Coffee Bean. But not only the most famous lady of the Neues Museum rests on Corian®: Many more stands and parts of display cabinets are made of the high quality solid surface material. Ancient exhibits from the Egypt Collection are mounted either on concrete or Corian® Bone.
The interior concept was developed by well-known designer Michele De Lucchi from Milan. Hilmar Kummle of 4D farm oversaw the project on-site in Berlin: “The requirements for materials on which ancient exhibits can be displayed have changed considerably in the last years. First we tested varnished MDF for its emissions and weren’t happy with the results. Corian® is known for its low VOC-factor and our tests were very successful. Therefore, we decided to place the most delicate exhibits on a pedestal or ground plate of Corian®.”

Facade Sportalm Shop, Vienna
When looking for a new corporate design, fashion label Sportalm from the Austrian city of Kitzbühl asked Vienna architecture office Baar-Baarenfels for their support. The honeycomb-shaped steel structure measuring five by eight meters consists of alternating big and small areas as well as a windowpane of four meters width. For the cladding of the meshed structure Corian was chosen as it can be fabricated without visible seams and is at the same time frost-resistant. Corian® forms a homogenous cladding for the robust steel structure. Some of the honeycombs are closed in order to brave potential wind force. In the upper right hand corner, approximately 15 areas are closed as well so the name of the store could be milled into the Corian®. At night, this part is backlit so the characters are clearly visible.

Desk lamp “zlinn”

Desk lamp “zlinn”
Architect Dietmar Lorenz from Karlsruhe has designed an unusual graceful yet elegant desk lamp that performs a truly remarkable balancing act between formal reduction and innovative technology. The extraordinary design and function of the „zlinn“ lamp is partly due to the special properties of DuPont™ Corian®. The material’s high translucency and special feel creates a soft light and gentle shape of the illuminated lamp. When the lamp is not in use, the material changes its appearance and gives off an almost opaque glow.
No cables disturb the beautiful appearance of “zlinn”. The LEDs are connected inductively via the table surface and wireless technology allows the “zlinn” lamp to serve as a functional and prestigious lighting object for modern office spaces.
