Davis Brody Bond, part of the Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup team, is designing the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African-American life, art, history and culture with collections covering slavery, post-Civil War reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance and the civil rights movement. The Smithsonian Institution’s newest museum, won in an international design competition, will be located on a five-acre tract of land on the National Mall adjacent to the Washington Monument. Sustainability has been a primary consideration from the initial conception and when completed, the new NMAAHC will stand as a demonstration of best practices in environmental design. The building itself will be a tool for teaching the importance of environmental stewardship through design excellence.
