Park Dounya

 Back to Projects list

Winner of an International Competition, the keystone to this development is a 1000-acre urban regional park that will be the first of its kind in Algeria. This project provided a rare opportunity to implement the latest technologies in green architecture and sustainability at an effective scale. The park is composed of elemental landscape typologies (forestation, meadows, orchards and bottomland oases) that are sculpted to work with the topography of the site and to provide shelter from winds and optimize the collection of water. Working with government agencies and environmental engineers, a wide range of program elements were conceived to fit sustainably within the expansive landscape. A highlight of the park is the Sustainability Center and Botanical Garden and adjacent 5000-seat amphitheater which create a distinctive cultural amenity for the city. The programmed nodes are conceived as jewels similar to those which hang from a Berber necklace. These spaces open to meadow views framed dramatically by forest. Other program elements in the park include a Recreation Center, an Equestrian Center, trails for hiking, jogging and biking, water reservoir lookouts and an urban promenade that links the park to new housing for 60,000 people.
