This adaptive reuse project restores the former Arnold Constable department store building at the corner of Canal and Mercer Street to its 1855 appearance. On the interior, the store is converted to a rental apartment building with retail at the base. The restoration includes removal of a fire escape on the Mercer Street façade, along with restoration of the building’s glazed storefronts and arched bases. The project received a Certificate of Appropriateness from the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission and a Special Permit for the change in use from manufacturing to residential from the City Planning Commission.
