This 38,200 SF public open space on the East River in Williamsburg is on the former Schaefer Brewery site. The project provides a connection to the waterfront from Kent Avenue and an esplanade from South 8th Street to South 11th Street. ABB provided complete landscape architectural design services and secured approvals from the NYC Art Commission and NYC Department of City Planning. ABB added spatial definition by creating a bi-level esplanade. The upper level includes an overlook patio that takes advantage of views across the East River, while the lower level includes a continuous custom wood and stainless steel bench integrated into a low site wall. ABB’s bi-level design approach also helps to address soil contamination issues, which required the placement of a two-foot soil cap over existing soil in areas to be landscaped.

Site amenities developed by ABB include: a 325 LF wood deck waterfront esplanade; a custom designed bulkhead railing; a patio overlook with an arbor; custom designed benches; game tables and chairs; a decorative screen/vine armature and entry marker; lighting; and plantings. The waterfront development will eventually continue to the north and south when adjacent sites are developed. ABB was therefore faced with the challenge of designing an esplanade that functions successfully as an independent open space in the short term (including the resolution of safety concerns associated with the esplanade termination at both the north and south ends), while also allowing for seamless integration with future developments.
