The original Rodeph Sholom synagogue, built in the early 1920s, has served the congregation remarkably well over its celebrated history. However, as the congregation experienced recent growth and new worship styles, the old facility needed both expansion and creative restructuring.
In response, PKSB renovated the entire facility from the lower level social hall to new roof top chapel. The building was refurbished and restored to its original luster while adding enhanced facilities and handicap accessibility. The jewel in the crown is the rooftop addition which provides a more intimate environment for small group services. The chapel is permanent but can be combined with the adjacent multipurpose room for expanded services on high holidays. Both rooms open into the new roof garden. With city and park views, the terrace is a unique outdoor space for religious and life-cycle celebrations.
The effort began with a master plan that included infrastructure upgrades and required approvals from the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Board of Standards and Appeals.
