PUBLIC SERVICES
Competition design for newly built police station

A highly functional competition design, radiating both openness and vigilance, was submitted for a new police station in Bruges. The site has clear urban planning potential and the building certainly has the power to become a beacon in the city.

Visitors access the heart of the building via a promenade loop leading from the forecourt via a public courtyard. Openness, security and readability are key concepts of this design. The introverted inner space serves as a hub for all police functions, while symbolizing privacy, functionality and centrality. In a simple movement, the facade synthesizes a sunscreen concept with a highly distinctive and subtle presence. The facade comprises folded steel fins, ensuring optimum visibility. The abstract police logo on the front also heightens the visibility of the building and the facade principle can be applied in due course to a variety of police services. The distinctive and refined effect is similar to the Bruges lace of which the ‘Venice of the North’ is so proud.
