Hank Koning (Principal in Charge of Technical & Code Issues) and Julie Eizenberg (Principal in Charge of Design) founded the firm in 1981. They are both licensed as Architects in California and Australia, and hold degrees in Architecture from the University of Melbourne, Australia (1978) and the University of California in Los Angeles (1980). Julie teaches and lectures extensively in the U.S. and abroad and serves on numerous juries and panels and is a Peer Reviewer for the GSA Design Excellence program. Her belief that design excellence can be achieved in restricted budget and socially-oriented projects has been a driving force in the firm and the success of the projects nationally and internationally has helped refocus architects’ attention on these issues. Hank Koning’s background merges strong design skills with technical innovation. His vision and creative thinking has driven the firm's approach to large scale and urban design projects. He brings thorough material, cost and code knowledge to building and site designs that evolve into sensible and practical solutions that are at the same time extraordinary. As a member of the US Green Building Council, he continues to lead the effort in integrating sustainable design ideas into quality design for healthy, environmentally-friendly buildings.
