The environmental elements of light, water, sound, and air define the interior architecture and design of 152 Elizabeth Street, an ultra-luxury condominium development in Manhattan’s Nolita neighborhood. Gabellini Sheppard Associates was commissioned by Sumaida + Khurana to design the seven individually tailored residential units and public spaces in harmony with the building’s architectural design by Tadao Ando Architect & Associates, as well as to serve as executive architect for the seven-story, 32,000-square-foot project. The resulting spaces are characterized by sensory richness and profound simplicity, elevating both sustainability and comfort.
The artful play of light and shadow begins in the entrance vestibule, where the naturally backlit water wall and glowing coves signal passage from the street into a more harmonious realm. Inside the apartments, the ample sunlight is balanced by ambient illumination features such as translucent light veils, floating pools of light, and perimeter light frames, all seamlessly integrated into the architecture. The sensory pleasures of water continue from the water wall to the bathrooms conceived as spa chambers with Japanese-style soaking tubs, and on to the penthouse reflecting pool. Acoustically, the interiors perform as private cocoons, with sound-attenuating floor and wall construction as well as a high-performance glass curtain wall. Air quality and temperature are maintained by quiet systems with concealed vents and returns, and by the operable windows and skylights.
Finishes and fixtures are selected to enhance the performance and comfort of everyday life, with an emphasis on natural materials. Exposed concrete walls and floor-to-ceiling glass panels are complemented by sustainable wide-plank oak flooring, light oak cabinetry, an artisan plaster wall surrounding the fireplace, honed white Bianco Sivec marble bathrooms, grey Pietra Cardosa stone encasing the fireplace, and honed black Absolute granite elevator volumes. The kitchens offer natural light and enhanced flexibility with a sliding island countertop of honed Fango marble. At once elemental and refined in their simplicity, the interiors extend the presence of the natural world.
